Doug Chotkevys, Dana Point City Manager, will relate his “secret passion” for historic preservation and describe his related experiences. Before coming to our City 10 years ago, Doug served as the Assistant and then Acting City Manager, of Whittier. It was there that he identified over $5 million dollars of Federal, State and County Park grant money to pay for the grassroots effort to restore the Pio Pico Adobe and State Historic Park grounds to their 1880s condition, and then managed the restoration effort! He also worked with Jim Wilson of 30th Street Architects on the restoration project of the circa 1892 Whittier Train Depot.

Thursday, Nov. 10, 8:45am-4pm.

To commemorate the sesquicentennial of the 1861 start of America’s Civil War, the Historical Society is offering a trip by bus to visit the last remaining Civil War era military facility in this area – the Drum Barracks in Wilmington. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a California Historic Landmark and holds an important collection of historical artifacts.

The tour will also include a visit to the nearby Banning Residence Museum, the home of Phineas Banning, who donated the land for the nearby Drum Barracks.

The Drum Barracks was once the junior officers’ barracks. As a museum, its rooms have been outfitted as single and married troop bedrooms, and there is a parlor, an armory, a model room and a gift shop.

Reservations can be held with a check for $50 per person which includes round-trip bus fare, entry donations to both the Barracks and Museum and a box lunch that will be served picnic style in Banning Park.

Date: Thursday, November 10, 2011
Place: The bus will be in the Selva Parking lot at the end of Selva Road on the ocean side of PCH.
Time: 8:45am departure. Return at 4:00pm.

Please call (949) 248-8121 for reservations

Program Notes:

“2011 Founders Day Honoree, Bea Reed”

She has been a loyal and active Dana Point Historical Society member since its inception as the Dana Point / Capistrano Beach Historical Society. Bea Reed was a civic leader in the Capistrano Beach Community Association, working toward the incorporation of her hometown. When that movement led to the combination of it and Dana Point into one city, she followed that path and remained active to its culmination.

This popular annual program will also pay tribute to our many life members, to whom we will propose a toast along with nibbled refreshments. Parking will be in the Community House lot and along San Juan Avenue. There is room for everyone for this free program and a guest book will be provided for your message to Bea.
