Dana Point History: The Woodruff Era

1926      Sidney Woodruff formed the Dana Point Syndicate, in partnership with the Chandler family of the L.A. Times and General M. H. Sherman, in order to purchase Anna Walters Walker's holdings and buy additional lands to develop a seacoast recreational community named Dana Point.

1928     Eventually, some 35 houses were built, 13 by Mr. Woodruff, the rest by purchasers of plots sold by Mr. Woodruff.

1930      Mr. Woodruff conducted a ground-breaking ceremony for the Dana Point Inn, but the Depression forced the termination of the building of the Inn.  A few features of the construction remain.

1939     The Dana Point Inn Syndicate was formally dissolved, and the land was sold off to the Chandler family, ending the Woodruff era in Dana Point.

6:30 Social—7:00 Program
Dana Hills Tennis Center

Lighting our way toward learning everything we can about the study of lighthouses will be a local pair of experts.

Ed Guy, founder of the Dana Point Lighthouse Society, will tell us how it all started and came to be such a popular topic in this harbor town.

John Gile, current president, will bring us up-to-date about the venerable society.

Bring your own light-lore and questions.  Check your own local history. Who has the oldest hometown lighthouse?
